BNP sounds off pre-hartal caution

Posted by methun

Replying to Awami League leaders' claim that Thursday's general strike will add to people's sufferings, BNP has warned that it will not bear any responsibility for violence.

"Hartal is people's right. I want to warn the government that they do not infringe that right," BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told a rally in front of the party's Naya Paltan headquarters on Wednesday.

"They are not worried about people's sufferings since they took office through election-engineering with sacks of money given by a neighbouring country, not by people's vote," he added.

Police dispersed the BNP supporters when brickbats were thrown on two vehicles from a procession organised after the rally. No casualties were reported.

Before that, BNP's student front Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal activists burned a tyre in front of the BNP headquarters.

Earlier, standing committee member Khandker Mosharraf Hossain said, "It is not hartal or the opposition's anti-government campaign but the Awami League government that is responsible for people's sufferings."

"[The government] has failed in every sector," he added.

BNP and its allies called the general strike protesting against hike in fuel prices.
