Police were not late to react, claims IGP

Posted by bangladesh

The Inspector General of Police on Wednesday told the High Court the police had immediately ordered reinforcements on being informed about last month's hate attacks on Buddhist settlements in Ramu.

Hassan Mahmood Khandaker came up with the claim in the report after the higher court wanted to know what the police had done when one of the worst communal riots in decades had broken out.

The report, however, did not mention exactly when the police first received the news, amid allegations that they were too late to react to the violence.

Deputy Attorney General Al Amin submitted the report, prepared by Senior Assistance Superintendent of Police (Law) Md Mizanur Rahman on behalf of IGP, to the bench of Justices Mirza Hossain Haider and Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo.

On Oct 3, the court asked the police and the Ministry of Home Affairs to report in 15 days detailing what they had done to protect the lives and property of the minority Buddhists.

The riot that began on Sep 29 night lasted for two days, leaving houses, shops and temples of Buddhists and Hindus looted, ravaged and burnt.

Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua, a resident of Ramu, moved the court. The Home Secretary was also asked to respond but he failed to turn in his version and prayed for more time.

According to the report, immediately after receiving the news of riot from the Cox's Bazaar district's Superintendent of Police, the IGP had made arrangements for additional police deployment at Ramu, and contacted other stakeholders of the government for ensuring security of the minority community.

"He along with the Home Minister visited the area the day after the incident. At that time he ordered Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the area to take immediate action against those involved in the incidents at Ramu and other places," said the report.

"The DIG himself monitored the overall situation and performances of RAB, police, Armed Police Battalion and BGB deployed in the affected areas.

"A three-member team led by the DIG of the Chittagong range has been formed to investigate the Sep 29 incident at Ramu, alongside the probe initiated by the government," the report continued.

"As many as 16 cases were filed with four police stations in Cox's Bazaar following the incidents at Ramu and its adjoining areas and 211 suspects have been arrested."

The report continued, the police had also been directed to secure the lives and property of all minority communities, their places of worship including pagoda, temple, and church in line with the High Court order.

It further said precautionary measures were taken to prevent a repeat.

"The Inspector General of Police is also holding meetings with local leaders of all religious communities, politicians, and members of the civil society in the affected areas. The Inspector General of Police visited Cox's Bazaar district on Oct 15 for evaluating the latest situation there," it clarified.

The riot broke out over the allegation of denigrating Islam by a Buddhist youth. At least seven Buddhist temples, 30 houses and a number of shops were set afire during the riot.

The hate attacks spread to Cox's Bazaar's Ukhia and Teknaf and Chittagong's Patia the next day.

Ramu Police Station's Officer in-Charge Nozibul Islam was removed after the incident amid allegations that the riot would have been avoided had police gone into action immediately.

Police clash with JU students; several hurt

Posted by bangladesh

Police have fired rubber bullets as they have clashed with students of Jahangirnagar University protesting against the arrest of a fellow student, leaving several people injured, police and witnesses said on Thursday.

At least five students suffered bullet injuries when police fired on them to disperse the protesters during the clash immediately after midnight on Wednesday.

The violence broke out after police arrested the student who allegedly attacked a leader of the ruling Awami League's student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).

In response to the police attack, the protesting students blocked the Dhaka-Aricha highway following the clash.

The students also vandalised the main gate of the university and its several other buildings.

Police file case over Ashulia unrest

Posted by bangladesh

Police have sued several hundred people over the demonstrations by readymade garment workers in Ashulia for riot and vandalism.

Ashulia Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Hafizur Rahman filed the case in the wee hours of Sunday on charges of blockading the road, assaulting police, obstruction to government work and vandalism.

Eleven people, all of whom are leaders and activists of main opposition BNP and its front organisations, were named in the case along with several hundred other unnamed people.

Anwar Hossain, a BNP leader who owns Anwar CNG filling station and former member of Piarpur Union's ward number 1, has been made the chief accused in the case.

Manager of the filling station Abul Kashem alleged up to 15 policemen, led by Ashulia Police Station OC (investigation) Mustafa Kamal, broke into the station's office room where Anwar was sitting and beat him up around 9am.

Kashem said the BNP leader was currently undergoing treatment at Savar's Enam Medical College Hospital.

The garment workers at Ashulia demonstrated again on Sunday morning as the weeklong unrest reached a new height after factory owners shut all garment factories in the industrial hub for an indefinite period.

They have been demonstrating since June 11 demanding better wages. Hundreds of people have been injured and over 150 vehicles vandalised during the weeklong protest.

On Thursday, the owners failed to agree on the proposal of FBCCI President AK Azad, owner of Ha-Meem Group, to raise salaries.

The meeting, however, ended deciding that all factories in Ashulia would be shut down if the ongoing unrest was not contained by Sunday.

Apex bodies -- Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) -- took the decision and also threatened to shut all factories nationwide.

Around 450,000-500,000 workers are engaged in nearly 350 garment factories in Ashulia and there are about 3,500 garments factories across the country.

Police stop Dhaka-bound launches

Posted by bangladesh

Police prevented on Sunday launches headed for Dhaka from Barisal apparently to prevent people from joining an opposition rally, saying there was a chance of a cyclone.

But neither the weather office, nor the Barisal Launch Terminal authorities had any information of the inclement weather.

Police in the evening asked passenger ferries at the Barisal terminal to anchor in the mid-river.

Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Shaheduzzaman said, "Scheduled launch trips to the capital have been cancelled due to disastrous weather."

Launch communications on other routes will remain uninterrupted, he added.

The incident coincided with the one that took place ahead of opposition BNP's rally on Mar 12, when launch and bus communications with Dhaka from across the country were suspended allegedly by authorities.

The BNP and its allies are preparing for a rally at Naya Paltan on Monday and a senior opposition leader announced that they were expecting 1.5 million people in attendance.

Senior observer at Barisal Met Office Pranab Kumar Roy told bdnews24.com, "The weather is normal today. There is no cautionary signal in effect."

Assistant Boat Officer of Barisal Launch Terminal Bashir Ali said, "We don't have any instructions. Police have cancelled all the scheduled trips to the capital."

Govt has no control over police: Moudud

Posted by bangladesh

In the wake of several incidents of police attack on journalists, senior BNP leader Moudud Ahmed said on Wednesday the government lost control over the law enforcers.

"The State Minister for Home has asked journalists to stay away from police. Such remarks after the brutal behaviour of police prove that the government has no control over them," said Moudud, a BNP Standing Committee Member. "They (government) have failed to run the country."

State Minister for Home Shamsul Hoque Tuku on Tuesday suggested journalists to keep safe distance from police when they are on duty to avoid any tussle with them.

"Many untoward incidents can be avoided if newsmen keep themselves away from police when they are on duty in a chaotic place," he said.

Moudud reacted over the remarks while placing wreaths on BNP founder Ziaur Rahman's grave at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar to mark his 31st death anniversary.

The BNP and its associate organisations, led by Chairperson Khaleda Zia, placed wreaths on the grave in the morning.

Moudud said Awami League did not believe in democracy.

"It was Ziaur Rahman who returned the country to the path of democracy from one-party rule in 1975," he said.

"Our leader Khaleda Zia gave democracy an institutional shape through the 12th Amendment of the Constitution. But the government has violated the people's right to vote by annulling the caretaker government system through the 15th Amendment," he added.

Moudud also reminded that Khaleda would announce fresh agitations from a rally in Dhaka on June 11 if the demand for restoring an election time caretaker government is not met by the June 10 deadline.

Asked what type of demonstration could be announced, Moudud said, "The programmes are yet to be finalised. It will be decided on June 9 or 10."

Police 'far better' now: Shahara

Posted by bangladesh

The Home Minister on Wednesday sprung to the defence of the under-fire police force, claiming its behaviour is 'far better' now than before.

Shahara Khatun said reforms were underway to make the force 'pro-people'.

She made the comment only a day after police were accused of sexually assaulted a young woman and beating journalists at the Judges' Court premises in Dhaka.

"There are 141,000 police personnel in the country. I would not say all are good (well behaved). But we are working to make them pro-people," Sahara said.

She gestured to her right leg and said, "Police are now far better than before. My right leg is broken. Such incident also took place [in police action in the past]."

The government will take measures if there was any 'wrongdoings' in the police force, Shahara said.

"I was a political activist on the streets and have been pursuing politics since the Pakistani regime. We took action in the last three and a half years whenever there were wrongdoings in the police. Action will also be taken in future."

She dodged a 'yes' or 'no' answer to a question as to whether the media was the rival of police and government.

"People rush to police in incidents of burglary and robbery, but police don't torture them then."

She further claimed that the government took immediate measures in the incidents of police negligence and inaction.

Responding to a media query about the repression on the journalists by police on the court premises in old Dhaka, Shahara said the government took action soon after the incident. "Investigation is underway and measures will be taken [against those found responsible]."

Police on Tuesday withdrew two Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs) over allegations of sexually harassing a woman at the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court premises.

After a heated verbal exchange, the policemen dragged the young woman to the 'Police Club' on the court premises and sexually assaulted her, according to the lawyers who witnessed the incident.

As the Court Correspondents rushed there on information to have statement from police, they attacked three journalists and two lawyers.

Amid severe criticism, police withdrew ASIs ANuruzzaman Sarker and Amir Afzal Biplob in the evening. Police also formed a panel to investigate the incident.

Last week, police beat up three photojournalists of the daily Prothom Alo, snatched their cameras and cell phones and swore at them while they were taking photos of demonstrations by polytechnic students in Agargaon.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police after primary investigations closed Shahidul Islam, Assistant Commissioner (AC) of Tejgaon zone, and suspended nine policemen.

State Minister for Home Shamsul Haque Tuku at a discussion on Tuesday advised journalists to keep a "safe distance" from police while gathering news.

"Journalist can avoid such unwanted incidents if they collect news or take photos by keeping a safe distance from police," he advised.

Home Minister Shahara Khatun on Wednesday claimed that the media twisted the remarks of her deputy.

Earlier, Shahara attended an inter-ministerial meeting on reduction of extortion in the transport sector.

Tejgaon police officer suspended

Tejgaon zone Assistant Commissioner of Police Shahidul Islam, closed to the police headquarters for assaulting three journalists on Saturday, has now been put under suspension.

Inspector General of Police Hassan Mahmud Khandker confirmed  about the suspension of Shahidul hours after another top police official said Shahidul had been reinstated to active duty.

The move came amidst protests and agitation by journalists demanding arrest of the policemen involved in the beating and awarding exemplary punishment to them.

Earlier in the day, Additional Inspector General (AIG) Shahidul Haque told  "Shahidul Islam, who was closed off to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police headquarters after withdrawal, has been transferred to Rangamati's Betbunia."

On Saturday, some police personnel, including Islam, assaulted three photo journalists of Bengali daily Prothom Alo, who were taking photos of students of Dhaka Mohila Polytechnic Institute during their demonstration at Agargaon.

After a preliminary inquiry on the very day of mishap, authorities withdrew Islam to the police headquarters and suspended nine others. They also formed a probe committee manned by DMP Joint Commissioner Shahabuddin Qureshi and asked for a report on the incident in seven days.

Leaders of various journalists' unions demanded arrest of the police officers involved in the incident and exemplary punishment from an agitation in front of the National Press Club on Sunday.

Three journalists of Bengali daily Prothom Alo were assaulted by police while covering the incident.

Prothom Alo photographer Khaled Sarker told journalists that some police personnel, not in their uniforms, attacked a photo journalist of the daily when he tried to snap a photo of the demonstrators at Agargaon.

Khaled and another journalist of the daily were assaulted, too, when they tried to save the photo journalist, he alleged.

The three journalists were taken to the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station later, he said. They took treatment from the Pangu Hospital after they were freed, Khaled added.

The journalists were later transferred to Trauma Centre for better treatment. Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad visited them there.

4 infants found in dustbin

The police on Wednesday recovered bodies of four newborn babies from a roadside dustbin at Jatrabari in the city.

Sub-inspector of Jatrabari Police Station Emran Hossain told  that they recovered the bodies at noon on getting information from local people.

Police suspect that the babies might have been given birth through abortions at one of the nearby clinics and later thrown into the dustbin.

"Recovering bodies of four infants from one place is a very rare incident. We're looking into the matter," the police officer added.

Number of coercive abortions has risen over the years in the country.

Khokon, two others detained

Police on Thursday detained BNP Education Secretary Khairul Kabir Khokan and two others near the party's headquarters at Naya Paltan as the opposition enforced a day-long nationwide shutdown demanding release of senior leaders.

Police nab disgraced RAB commander

Posted by bangladesh

Police have arrested the disgraced army officer who allegedly led the looting of Tk 20 million from a Chittagong shrine while being the commander of a RAB unit.

The former RAB-7 chief, discharged lieutenant colonel Zulfikar Ali Majumdar, has been the prime accused in the case after the incident at Talsara Darbar Sharif in Chittagong during a raid on Nov 4.

A police officer in Dhaka said Thursday that he was arrested from a house in the city's Maghbazar area.

"He was in a house in Bhuter Goli and we took him into custody at around 4am," Ramna OC Shah Alam told .

A Chittagong police officer, Anwara Police Station OC Abdus Salam, also participated in the raid and was the one who identified Zulfikar.

They were accused of breaking open the almirah of the shrine during a raid on Nov 4, 2011 and stealing Tk 20 million in cash. No progress in Ilias' missing case: police

Posted by bangladesh

Police told a Dhaka court on Sunday that they were yet to make any headway into BNP leader M Ilias Ali's 'missing' case.

The law-enforcing agency admitted its failure in a report to the court of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Muniruzzaman, four days after the BNP organising secretary went missing.

Ali's wife Tahsina Rushdir Luna had filed a general diary with the Banani police on Wednesday after his car was found abandoned in Mahakhali. Following the complaint, the magistrate ordered police to inform the court of the probe progress every 48 hours.

Ali's wife had also sought the High Court's intervention to find her missing husband.

On Saturday, Rapid Action Battalion conducted raids on four houses in Pubail, Gazipur.

RAB officials said they conducted the searches based on a letter given to them by Ilias Ali's wife. They said she was with them during the operations.

Tahsina, however, rejected the RAB claims while speaking to reporters.

The BNP has held the government responsible for the disappearance. Prime minister Sheikh Hasina described the missing incident a 'new drama staged by BNP'.

The BNP spokesperson, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, had threatened to enforce non-stop general strike if Ali was not found.

The main opposition's daylong countrywide strike for Sunday is going on amid reports of sporadic clashes with police.

In Sylhet, police have detained more than 50 BNP activists following violent clashes that left more than 20 people injured.

Meanwhile, several homemade bombs had reportedly exploded in the capital.

Ilias Ali is also BNP's Sylhet unit chief and a former lawmaker

BNP-police clash in Sylhet, 51 detained

Posted by bangladesh

Police on Sunday fired around 100 rounds of blank shots and tear shells in Sylhet as massive clashes broke out between the law enforcers and pro-shutdown pickets on Sunday afternoon.

At least 20 were injured during the clashes and over 50 people detained, police said.

However, the situation was peaceful until the afternoon.

Clash ensued in Sylhet city after police barred BNP activists from taking out a procession in support of the shutdown protesting disappearance of one of the BNP's organising secretaries, M Ilias Ali.

The clashes ensued around 12:30pm at Zindabazar when police barred a procession led by Jamiyate Ulamaye Islam, member of the newly formed BNP-led 18-Party Coalition, Kotwali police officer in charge Ataur Rahman said.

Police fired at least 20 tear shells and 30 blank shots to bring the situation under control. They also detained 14 activists from the area that turned into a battle zone with opposition activists pelting the law enforcers with brickbats.

Earlier, opposition activists gathered at City Centre after police foiled a number of their attempts around the city to take out processions.

Chases and counter-chases also took place at the city's Babna Intersection. Law enforcers detained an activist during the altercation, South Surma police said.

A clash broke out at Tuker Bazar also and police fired 20-25 tear gas shells and blank shots and detained around 20 activists, Sylhet Mertopolitan Police deputy commissioner Ezaz Ahmed said.

BNP activists surrounded the Bishwanath Police Station, the area where Ilias Ali's home is, around noon and pelted brickbats. A clash between the law enforcers and protesters began and police fired 50 tear shells and blank shots. They also detained 11 activists from there.

Earlier, around 11:00am, pickets vandalised an auto-rickshaw carrying newspapers and a medicine shop and torched a food shop. Police have detained three pickets from there, Sylhet district SP Shakhawat Hossain said.

Additional police have been deployed at the key points of Sylhet city including Ambarkhana, Chouhatta, Court Point, Jindabazar and City Point. Rapid Action Battalion personnel are also patrolling the city.

Additional commissioner of Sylhet Mertopolitan Police Abdullah Al Azad Choudhury said, "Police are working to ensure safety and security of the people."

He added they detained two Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists, Saidul Enam Choudhury Lahin, 28, and Enamul Haque Choudhury Shamim, 32, from Zindabazar in the morning along with a knife and a motorcycle.

Most of the streets are empty due to the shutdown except for the rickshaws plying the streets. Long route buses are not operating and most of the shops are closed.

Around 8am, police detained four pickets from Eidgah area in Shayestanagar. They are Azizul Islam, 35, Sumon Mia, 30, Jewel Mia, 28, and district JCD joint convenor Imran Ahmed, 30.

A daylong shutdown was also enforced on Thursday in Sylhet over Ilias Ali's disappearance, who is also the chief of the district BNP.

Awarding 'crossfire' raises questions

Posted by NEWS

The Rapid Action Battalion director general Mokhlesur Rahman had received a gallantry award along with 12 of his colleagues this year.

The description of the Bangladesh Police Medal given to this additional inspector general rank official says: "His skillful guidance has led to the arrest of 13 top extremist leaders in RAB operations in 2011, as well as the recovery of large amounts of arms and explosives. Nine other extremists have also been killed in gunfights with RAB."

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina handed over Mokhlesur's the award on Tuesday.

The elite crime-fighting unit of police is heavily criticised by local and international human rights organisations for its alleged extrajudicial killings.

Ain O Shalish Kendra chief Sultana Kamal told  it was regrettable that the state had issued honours for a controversial issue such as 'crossfire'.

When asked for a reaction from Mokhlesur on this matter, he defended by saying, "Do you want us to stand by and watch criminals shoot us and run?"

In this year's Police Week, 59 members of the police and RAB were awarded Bangladesh Police Medal and President's Police Medal, 12 of whom were RAB members.

Of these men, Lt Col Monirul Haque, Lt Col Ziaul Ahsan, Kamrujjaman, Shah Mohammad Azad, Jahidul Islam, Taherul Islam and Awlad Hossain received the PPM for 'deaths of pirates and bandits'.

Sultana Kamal said the awards were encouraging extrajudicial killings while people had questions about such deaths, and added this was equivalent to waving off those questions.

"There are cases against RAB for extrajudicial killings and the cases are still unresolved," she said.

PPM-awarded Ziaul Ahsan's award description tells of an incident on June 22 last year. His team saw an empty trawler boat near the forest station on Bhola river in the Sundarbans. Searching around the boat, they found footprints that led deeper into the forest and when they moved along the track, shots were fired from inside the forest.

RAB fired back in the heat of the moment and later four bullet-riddled bodies were recovered from inside the forest.

Since the inception of RAB in 2004, the words 'crossfire' and 'gunfight' have become part of the everyday vocabulary. Human rights organisations allege the law enforcers are committing extrajudicial killings in the guise of gunfights.

According to Ain O Shalish Kendra, 100 people were killed in 2011 in custody or in 'gunfights'.

When asked for a comment on awarding crossfires, National Human Rights Commission chairman Mizanur Rahman said he could not comment without looking at individual cases.

"I think the government should think carefully before awarding an act that is controversial. Capturing extremists, pirates or bandits is more courageous than killing them.

"But I would like to believe the awards were given after sufficient analysis," he added.

JnU students pause protest on assurance

Posted by methun

After two days of violent street demonstrations, students of Jagannath University have paused their agitation over a funding row following assurance from the ruling party.

The decision to halt the protest came on Monday afternoon from a meeting between the students, teachers and several student organisations.

Ruling Awami League's student front Chhatra League president Badiuzzaman Sohagh, after the meeting, told reporters that Awami League presidium member Obaidul Kader will sit with the stakeholders to resolve the matter at the Imperial Hotel at Gulistan on Tuesday.

The students had taken to the streets for a second day protesting the provision that the public university should generate its own income to operate.

Following Sunday's protest, some 1500 students had blocked the city's Raisa Bazar-Naya Bazar street at 8:45am on Monday amid police cordon, creating a severe traffic snarl-up on the Dhoalikhal connecting road and Dhaka-Dohar road.

The general secretary of the university's Chhatra Union unit Nazmul Hasan told reporters, "We've pushed back the protest for now. But we'll announce instant programmes if nothing positive comes out from tomorrow's talks."

At a press briefing following the meeting, JnU vice-chancellor Prof Mesbahuddin said, "We're trying with honesty and good sense. I hope the law will be reformed at the earliest."

According to the Article 27 (4) of the Jagannath University Act- 2005, the university authority will have to fund its operations themselves. The Jagannath College, founded in 1884, was turned into a university in 2005.

The students say the university raise their semester fees from Tk 3,500 to Tk 20,000 to raise revenue. Their other demands include recovery of university dormitories, setting up a library, and increased transport facilities.

Earlier in the day, baton-wielding police had clubbed and dispersed the students around 10am and several people including police constable Nazrul Islam and students were injured during brief clashes.

Police also detained at least 24 students during the protests on Monday before the situation came under control, Kotwali Police Station chief Salahuddin told bdnews24.com.

The traffic became normal around 10:30am after the protesters left the street. They took position inside the university campus.

Chhatra League activists also paraded down the street calling for repeal of the law while its president Shohag sat with the students on the campus.

The students of JnU have long been demanding the rule be repealed amid support from the teachers.

University's proctor Ashok Kumar Saha on Sunday told bdnews24.com: "We are holding talks with the government to repeal this clause as its implementation would hike tuition fees and there will be very little difference between Jagannath University and other private initiatives."

The angry students began their protests at 11am on Sunday in front of the National Press Club after they came to know about the funding rule from a newspaper report.

Police charged batons to disperse them and the students, in retaliation, smashed several vehicles.

No more Jamaat vandalism: PM

Posted by methun

A week after Jamaat-e-Islami activists torched police cars and vandalised vehicles, prime minister Sheikh Hasina has said the party will not be allowed to go on the rampage again.

"Militant activities are off in the country, the war crimes trial is proceeding. A quarter is active to thwart the process that supports development and progress," Hasina told a function in New York on Monday.

"Bangladesh is not a terrorist country. Our country been recognised as a liberal democratic one in the world," she said.

The prime minister was speaking at a reception given by the Bangladeshi expatriates in New York.

Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir clashed with police in Dhaka and Chittagong on Sep 19 injuring at least 50 law enforcers. They also vandalised and set ablaze several vehicles.

Hasina arrived in New York on Sep 18 to join the 66th UN General Assembly. She is likely to leave for Dhaka on Sep 28.

About the caretaker government system, the prime minister said, "The caretaker government bill had been passed in parliament by installing killers of Bangabandhu in parliament. A law passed by killers cannot do any good to people."

She said the spirit of the original constitution of 1972 has been 'restored'. "No-one will be able to capture power by violating the constitution."

The caretaker government system had been repealed through the passage of the 15th Amendment to the constitution in parliament on June 30 following a Supreme Court order.

'ONE HARTAL A MONTH'

Hasina ridiculed opposition BNP's movement and shutdowns, joked that the people would get rest if they call general strikes once a month.

She termed lockdowns 'environment-friendly' and said the factories owned by opposition supporters remain open during shutdowns.

BNP and its allies enforced seven general strikes, including one on Sep 22, during the current government's tenure.

The prime minister termed the Awami League's 1996-2001 tenure the 'golden era' of Bangladesh.

"People's dreams started falling apart after 2001. BNP and their coalition government had made Bangladesh questionable at international level.

"A total of 16 journalists had been killed and 1,500 others harassed at that time (BNP's tenure)," she added.

'WE'LL LEAVE POWER'

The prime minister said the government achieved 93 percent of the Annual Development Programme target in the last fiscal year and hoped that the GDP would grow at seven percent.

She also said no power lasts forever. "When people won't vote [us], we'll relinquish power. Many bad habits of those who bask in power get worse."

"Those power-mongers get crazy once they are deposed. They start stealing when they no more get what got easily overnight. I have been through many ups and downs in my life. We want to let go of our present for the people's welfare."

She urged the expatriates to invest in Bangladesh and announced that the Biman Bangladesh Airline's New York flights would be re-launched once Boeing supplies plane.

"The firm is likely to supply plane in November," Hasina said.
