Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Saturday suspended nine policemen on charges of assaulting three journalists, who were covering the demonstrations by students of a polytechnic institute at Agargaon in the capital.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media and Community Services) Masudur Rahman also told that the move came after a preliminary probe into the incident.
He said that a one-member probe committee has been formed to further investigate the occurrence.
The suspended police officials are Sub-Inspector Jahirul Islam, Deputy Sub-Inspector Shafiqur Rahman and Nazmul Islam, Constables Motiur Rahman, Abdur Razzak, Mohammad Shahjahan, Mohammad Joynal, 'Ratan' and 'Jahangir'.
The authorities have also withdrawn Tejgaon Zone Assistant Commissioner Shahidul Islam immediately after the incident on Saturday, DMP Tejgaon Zone Deputy Commissioner Imam Hossain told .
Students of Dhaka Women's Polytechnic Institute (DWPI) demonstrated blocking the Rokeya Sharani for around two hours from 11am in protest against 'downgrading' rank of diploma engineers.
Three journalists of Bengali daily Prothom Alo were assaulted by police while covering the incident.
Prothom Alo photographer Khaled Sarker told journalists that some police personnel, not in their uniforms, attacked a photo journalist of the daily when he tried to snap a photo of the demonstrators at Agargaon.
Khaled and another journalist of the daily were assaulted, too, when they tried to save the photo journalist, he alleged.
The three journalists were taken to the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station later, he said. They took treatment from the Pangu Hospital after they were freed, Khaled added.
The journalists were later transferred to Trauma Centre for better treatment. Information Minister Abul Kalam Azad visited them there.
