10 held over DU, JnU admission forgery

Posted by bangladesh

Detectives in separate drives on Monday arrested 10 people including an official of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in connection with forgery in the Dhaka University 'Kha' unit and Jagannath University admission tests and public service recruitment tests.

The fraudsters had provided admission seekers with answers in return for money, Moshiur Rahman, Additional Deputy Commissioner of the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, told reporters.

The arrestees were identified as ACC Assistant Inspector Mofizur Rahman, former officer of the National Bank Kafil Uddin Mahmud, BBA student of the American International University of Bangladesh Rafayet Sani, former DU students Abdullah Al Mamun of English Language (currently doing MBA at DU), Amitav Chowdhury Amit of Political Science, Nurul Huda aka Dollar Mahmud (Zia Hall, Room No. 103) of Journalism and Masscommunication, and Habibur Rahman Habib, fourth year JnU student of Economics, Rubel Biswas, fourth year JnU student, and Ishtiaque Ahmed Parash of Political Science and Sazzad Hossain of Microbiology of the same university.

They were produced before journalists at the Police Media Centre on Monday noon.

After the press conference, ACC's Assistant Inspector Mofiz told bdnews24.com that after the agreement, they provided examinees with a special kind of watches ranging from Tk 12,000 to Tk 14,000. Examinees could receive answers of questions inside the examination hall via short messaging facility in the watches.

Mofiz admitted to have provided answers by this method at several admission and selection tests in return for one lakh to one-and-a-half lakh taka.

Among the arrested, Rafayet Sani, Abdullah Al Mamun, Amitav Chowdhury Amit and Dollar Mahmud looked up answers of questions. Parash, Sazzad, Habib and Rubel were in charge of keeping regular correspondence with the examinees, while Mofiz and Kafil co-ordinated the entire activity.

"The gang of tricksters has committed fraud at several competitive examinations since 2009," said Additional Sub Commissioner Moshiur Rahman.

They had about a hundred mobile phones looking like watches in their possession and it had been established that they provided answers to about hundred examinees in each examination, said Moshiur.

They were arrested in raids conducted from Shahabagh to Khilgaon in the capital on Monday.

The forgery through the special watch first came to notice during the 'Ka' unit examination of the Jagannath University on Oct 12. Invigilators held one student who received a short message on the watch-cum-mobile shortly after examination began. An Awami League activist was also arrested when he tried to get the student freed.

Authorities later released them following intervention from the Bangladesh Chhatra League leaders.

Later, one examinee and two Awami League activists were arrested at the test for admission to the 'Kha' unit of the same university on Oct 19.

It was that day that detective police had held three people red-handed taking ransom for a Jagannath University examinee held captive in the Zia Hall of Dhaka University.

DU students protest attacks on Hindus

Posted by bangladesh

Some 200 Dhaka University students blocked traffic for an hour in the city's Shahbagh area in a rare midnight protest on Wednesday to demand justice for the alleged attacks on Hindus in Satkhira two days ago.

The protesters who live at Jagannath Hall also announced that they would form a human chain in front of the prime minister's office at 10am on Thursday and wear black badges in protest against the attack.

They gathered in the dormitory around 10pm on Wednesday and later took out a procession. They took position at Shahbagh at midnight.

They were seen torching papers and tyres on the street that was not that busy after Wednesday midnight.

Ramna zone police assistant commissioner S M Shibli Noman told around 1am on Thursday that the students were demonstrating peacefully and police had been there to stop them if they turn violent.

The protesters said students of Fatehpur High School at Dakkhin Sripur of Satkhira's Kaliganj upazila on Mar 26 staged a drama Hujur Kebla, written by Abul Mansur Ahmed, to mark the Independence Day.

A local newspaper reported that Prophet Mohammad was disgraced in the drama, they said. The report made local Muslims angry at the school's assistant head teacher Mita Rani and other Hindus in the area, the protesters said.

They reportedly looted around eight homes of Hindus, including that of Mita, in the area and set fire to those houses on Monday alleging that Rani allowed the students to stage the drama to disgrace the prophet with an intention.

Manik Rakkhit, a Jagannath Hall student, demanded exemplary punishment of the attackers.

His fellow Prodip Chowdhury said National Human Rights Commission chairman Mizanur Rahman talks about many other issues but he is silent about torture on Hindus.

He said Monday's attack was similar to that of Chittagong's Hathazari on Feb 10.

The demonstrators urged prime minister Sheikh Hasina to take steps to stop such tortures and punish the attackers.

DU students set on fire 2 buses

Inmates of a Dhaka University dormitory set on fire two buses and vandalised another three on Monday night following an altercation with a bus driver in city's Azimpur area.

The inmates of S M Hall indulged in violence in front of Azimpur Maternity Hospital around 10.30pm.

They brought one of the buses to the university campus before damaging it completely.

Fire service man Farid Uddin told they tamed the blaze around 11pm.

"The incident took place after five students of S M Hall, who got into the bus near the city's Science Lab area, were forced to get down in front of Home Economics College," university proctor Amjad Ali told .

"Those students wanted to travel up to Azimpur," he said and added action will be taken against those found guilty after investigation into the incident.

However, the inmates of the hall alleged that they indulged in violence as they heard that one of the university students had been abducted by the transport owners.

Fresh 'Ga' unit test on Dec 20

Posted by methun

Hours after a Supreme Court directive, the Dhaka University has announced that fresh admission test for 'Ga' unit or business faculty in 2011-'12 academic sessions will be held on Dec 20.

The university syndicate took the decision on Wednesday evening, arts faculty dean Sadrul Amin told .

The admission test will be held from 3pm to 4pm, he informed.

The candidates who had appeared at the admission test on Oct 28 will be able to appear for the fresh test on their previous admit cards.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court overturned the High Court ruling on the admission test for 'Ga' unit and ordered the University of Dhaka to re-administer the exam.

A full bench of the top appellate court, led by the chief justice, in the ruling said the university will hold the test by Dec 21 for only those who had sat for the original exam on Oct 28.

The order came after hearing an appeal for an injunction on the High Court order to re-evaluate results of the first test.

The Appellate Division also ordered the premier university to keep the business faculty dean away from the re-examination.

Chamber judge Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain on Monday had forwarded the appeal of Dhaka University for temporary injunction to the full bench.

Results of 'Ga' unit admission test were published on Oct 31. The authorities re-evaluated the results after requests from examinees poured in, since a total of eight mistakes were found in the test paper. The number of successful candidates had trebled after re-evaluation of the scripts.

The university had initially decided to re-evaluate exam scripts but later said would conduct fresh test on Dec 9 upon complaints from the 'Ga' unit examinees.

Twelve candidates, who passed the test according to the first result, moved the High Court on Nov 22. The court ruled that the scripts should be re-evaluated instead of holding fresh examinations.

The High Court gave the ruling after it heard suggestions from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology professor Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, and president of Dhaka University Teachers' Association Mohammad Anwar Hossain.
