National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) chairman Mizanur Rahman Khan has slammed Jamaat-e-Islami for the clashes between its activists and police, and for vandalising and torching vehicles.
Without mentioning the name of the party, he said on Tuesday, "Those who set the vehicles on fire haven't ever thought that the buses were bought with the money people had paid as taxes? This chaos-creator group of marked war criminals and fundamentalists are people's enemy, human rights enemy."
Coalition of local NGOs (non-government organisations) Bangladesh organised the discussion at the Dhaka Reporters' Unity ahead of the International Day of Peace on Sep 21.
The NHRC chairman said, "Those who indulge in violence and create panic in people's minds are major hurdles in establishing peace in the country."
"The right to do politics or speak are indeed recognised. But looting state's possessions, arson and creating anarchy can't be legal in any society," he said.
Jamaat supporters clashed with police in Dhaka and Chittagong on Monday, and vandalised and torched a number of vehicles.
A T M Azharul Islam, acting secretary-general of the party, top leaders of which have been detained for war crimes charges, and publicity secretary Tasneem Alam were arrested along with many other activists after the clashes.
